Sardarni Harbans Kaur was born in Thatta Gulab Singh, a small village in District Gujranwala, now in Pakistan. Her childhood was filled with the warmth of family and the simplicity of village life. But in 1947, the Partition changed everything. With little more than hope, her family joined countless others making the uncertain journey across the new border.
Their path took them through Amritsar and Ludhiana, where they experienced both the kindness of strangers and the hardships of displacement. Eventually, they reached Delhi—a city crowded with refugees, yet alive with possibility. It was here, in modest surroundings, that Harbans Kaur and her siblings began to rebuild their lives.
For a young girl, these experiences became a lifelong lesson in resilience. She carried forward a spirit shaped by loss but strengthened by courage, and an unshakable belief in the power of kindness. These values, lived quietly yet profoundly, form the foundation of the legacy that inspires the Sadarni Harbans Kaur Memorial Foundation today.
Who Was Sardarni Harbans Kaur?
Sardarni Harbans Kaur was born in Thatta Gulab Singh, a small village in District Gujranwala—today part of Pakistan. In 1947, when the Partition of India reshaped millions of lives, her family journeyed from their village through Amritsar and Ludhiana before finally settling in Delhi, which became their permanent home. In 1955, she married Sardar Krishan Mohan Singh, son of Lala Sant Ram, whose family too had moved from Gujranwala to Delhi.
The Family
Together, Harbans Kaur and Krishan Mohan Singh raised five children—three daughters and two sons.
Building the Legacy
To honour their mother’s life and values, three of her surviving children—Charanjit Kaur (eldest daughter), Sharanjit Kaur (youngest daughter), and Jasbir Singh (youngest son)—envisioned a lasting tribute. They decided to establish a foundation in her name, with a mission close to her heart: supporting the education of children from marginalized communities.
